Overview

Ruralco is a values-led farming co-operative established in 1963, operating as the Ashburton Trading Society. They serve thousands of New Zealand farmers with a card-based purchasing network spanning over 3,000 businesses nationwide, offering consolidated billing, competitive pricing, and agricultural services including fuel, energy, seed, agronomy, and financial products.

Their existing technology stack was entirely legacy — critical business processes ran as bash scripts on local machines, backed by Microsoft Dynamics and MS SQL Server. Card management, invoice processing, merchant payouts, and statement generation were all manual or semi-automated processes that could not scale with the co-operative's growing member base and merchant network.

Techwondoe was engaged to execute a complete digital transformation — re-architecting every legacy service into a modern, serverless, cloud-native platform on Google Cloud. The engagement covered card issuance integration with Fiserv, AI-powered invoice extraction using Google Cloud AI, automated billing workflows, merchant and customer portals, and a fully automated Infrastructure as Code deployment pipeline.
